Review changes results in Island Estates voteBy Times staff writer© St. Petersburg Times published May 10, 2002 CLEARWATER -- The results of Island Estates' recent vote to adopt special neighborhood rules have changed. Originally, city planners announced that 18 of 23 proposed restrictions to preserve the waterfront community's appearance had passed a community vote in early April. The City Commission will consider making the restrictions -- which define things like how big houses can be in the neighborhood -- part of the city's code later this year. Now it turns out that 15 of the 23 proposed rules actually failed. Recently, planners went back and checked the city's rules, which stated that a proposed neighborhood rule needed the support of 51 percent of a community. That meant that three suggested rules, which had only 50.1 to 50.8 percent of the neighborhood's support in the recent vote, also did not pass muster. The additional failed proposals would have limited the parking of boats and recreation vehicles in the neighborhood unless inside a garage, limited the height of waterfront fences and required trash containers and mechanical equipment to be screened from view. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
