PALM HARBOR - The public is invited to the groundbreaking for the first phase of the Greater Palm Harbor Branch YMCA at 10 a.m. today at 1600 16th St.

The ceremony follows a campaign that has raised $2.5-million. Work clearing the site began a few weeks ago, and the first phase of the YMCA is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2004.

The branch's first phase will include a strength and cardiovascular wellness center, dance and exercise studios, children's play area and climbing gym and a nursery. Outdoors, the Y will have a heated eight-lane competition pool and a heated family recreational pool with a large water slide. Future phases include gymnasiums, a multipurpose room, teen center and skate park.
