Madeira Beach raises manager's spending cap

By Times Staff Writer

MADEIRA BEACH - Commissioners on Tuesday decided that the city manager can spend up to $15,000 per purchase without asking their permission. Rising fuel costs affecting a city-run marina inspired the proposal, which broadened during discussions to include any discretionary spending by the city manager. The Municipal Marina sells about 3,500 gallons of unleaded fuel each week and receives discounts for larger purchases. Commissioners noted that the $5,000 cap on a city manager's spending had no changed since 1975.

Commission reschedules investigation discussion

MADEIRA BEACH - The commission rescheduled a meeting to discuss a possible investigation into the former Board of Adjustment, putting that business on the June 8 City Commission meeting agenda. Earlier this month, the commission replaced the board with a special master, who will decide variances and special exceptions to building and zoning codes. Beyond lining up an attorney, the commission has taken no action to investigate alleged improprieties while the board was functioning.

Fire chief chosen to serve as city's interim manager

TREASURE ISLAND - Commissioners on Tuesday designated Fire Chief Charlie Fant as interim city manager. Fant replaces Chuck Coward, who resigned unexpectedly last month. Fant takes over June 5 with a salary increase of $2,000 a month. He will remain the head of his department while commissioners search for a permanent replacement.

Also on Tuesday, commissioners approved a three-year agreement with Public Works Director Don Hambidge that assures he remains on the job during the $65-million bridge project. Hambidge will receive a $5,000 annual bonus and three-month severance pay if his employment ends before the bridge is built.
