ST. PETERSBURG - Downtown's Saturday Morning Market has closed for the summer, ending a "fabulous" year, said Gail Eggeman, one of the organizers.

The market reopens Oct. 2, when cooler weather should be returning.

"We ended up with as many vendors as we could handle," said Eggeman. The market's new location on Central Avenue between First and Second streets has 72 vendor spots, which were occupied by 65 vendors, some taking more than one space.

The market runs for several hours on Saturday mornings and offers a variety of foods, fresh produce, crafts and arts. It usually has musical entertainment.

Eggeman said organizers want to try some themed Saturdays when the season reopens, such as a kids' day with activities or an education day where nonprofits would be on hand to answer questions about their organizations.

The market began in November 2002 and grew substantially this year.
