Nominations for the quarterly good neighbor award are being accepted until Friday. The award recognizes neighbors who help simply because help is needed - in following with the spirit of Lonnie Lea Napier, a county resident who died after falling from a tree while trying to rescue a neighbor's cat. Nominees must demonstrate an ongoing spirit of compassion and helpfulness to their neighbors.
Individuals, neighborhood associations and community groups may make nominations to the Office of Neighborhood Relations any time throughout the year. The county recognizes a "good neighbor" each quarter; an annual "Lonnie Lea Napier Good Neighbor" is selected from the quarterly winners.
Thi annual award comes with a $2,000 prize for the neighborhood association serving the area in which the recipient lives.
MANGO - The Hillsborough County 4-H Dog Project will begin its canine training series Sept. 14 with a registration event at the Mango Recreation Center.
The Dog Project is designed to give local 4-H members an opportunity to learn how to teach their dogs showmanship, obedience and agility.
"We train the kids to train their dogs, basically, so they can compete in shows if they want to, or just become better behaved pets," project coordinator Sally Alford said.
Interested families can register at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Mango Recreation Center, 11717 Clay Pit Road. The first training session is at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 21.
Parents of 4-H members are encouraged to volunteer. For more information, contact Alford at horsepny@tampabay.rr.com or the county 4-H office at 744-5519, ext. 116.
