Pinellas public schools will reopen today, resuming a school year that has been interrupted four times by hurricanes.
Though the academic year is 2 months old, the district has managed to work in only three uninterrupted weeks of class. Dozens of school districts in Florida are in a similar position.
Pinellas officials made the decision to reopen after Progress Energy crews restored power Tuesday to all but three Pinellas schools affected by Hurricane Jeanne. The remaining schools - Skycrest Elementary, Calvin Hunsinger School and San Jose Elementary - were scheduled to have power by this morning.
The district also received assurances that traffic signals had been restored throughout the county, making the roads safe again for school buses.
Aside from one makeup day scheduled for Oct. 15, officials have not decided how to make up the other five lost days.
