Sykes Enterprises to close call center in India

By SCOTT BARANCIK
Published January 31, 2005

Sykes Enterprises disclosed last week that it will lay off the staff at its Bangalore call center, less than three years after opening.

So how did the move play in India? United States-based reporter S. Rajagopalan of the Hindustan Times tried to get a handle on exactly why Sykes is leaving. But the Tampa company, which handles customer phone calls for clients such as Microsoft and SBC Communications via a global array of call centers, wasn't very forthcoming.

Spokesman Subhaash Kumar told the reporter that Sykes' decision was "purely financial." He denied reports that the employees' Indian accents were a factor.

Kumar didn't disclose how many workers will be laid off, or which other Sykes center in Asia would pick up the slack.

Rajagopalan wrote that Sykes' minimal disclosures were "in keeping with the secretive manner in which most outsourcing firms function."
