OPEN MIKE CONTEST: The Brandon Poets and Artists Guild hosts its annual poetry contest at 7:30. Winners receive Barnes & Noble gift certificates worth $100. Contestants should register at 7. They must also be at least 16 years old and read or recite their own work for no more than two minutes. Content should be suitable for children in the audience. Call 685-4403.
SATURDAY
ON THE LOOSA: The Everglades Appaloosa Horse Club puts on a full show starting at 8:30 this morning and Sunday. Categories include hunter-jumpers, halter and Western. Admission is free at the Bob Thomas Equestrian Center, 4800 U.S. 301 N. Call (954) 410-3690.
FREE SYMPHONY: The Florida Orchestra will perform A Symphony of Life at 7 in Plant Park, University of Tampa, 401 W Kennedy Blvd. Corporate sponsorships back the event, billed by the LifeLink Legacy Fund as a chance to raise awareness about the need for organ and tissue donation. BLUEGRASS: Several bands will bring a mix of gospel and bluegrass music at 7 to the Florida Opry, including Randy Scott, Buck Hummer & the Pick-Ups, the Southern Star Bluegrass Band, and the Wayne Lacey Family. AIR SHOW: For a week, the skies around Lakeland Linder Regional Airport will darken with daredevils as scores of acrobatic pilots show off their stuff. The Sun 'n Fun Fly-In starts this afternoon from 2 to 5, and continues at 2 daily until a noon finale April 18. The $30 daily registration also covers a full conference program with workshops and exhibitors. Discounts for Florida Air Museum members. Tickets after 5 p.m. run $5, including a spectacular Saturday air show starting at dusk. The conference takes place in the Sun 'n Fun headquarters by the airport, 4175 Medulla Road, Lakeland.
