St. Petersburg mulls BayWalk traffic

By Times Staff Writer
Published August 12, 2005

A St. Petersburg City Council committee asked city staffers Thursday to explore new options for controlling pedestrian and vehicular traffic flow at BayWalk.

Last month, the city installed pedestrian barriers along a portion of the north side of Second Avenue N, near a midblock crosswalk that leads to BayWalk. The barriers, which city officials say were installed to protect pedestrian safety, have stirred controversy, and antiwar protesters demonstrating at BayWalk have said the barriers impede their right to free speech.

The committee will consider other options for controlling pedestrian traffic, including closing Second Ave N to vehicles during festivals and events.
