TAMPA - Robert Campbell, 50, of 3799 W Gandy Blvd. Apt. 218, was the bicyclist who died this week after he collided with a 1996 Mitsubishi, police said Wednesday.

Tampa police spokesman Joe Durkin said the Mitsubishi driver, 18-year-old Christopher Dean of 7309 Sherrill St. in Tampa, will not be charged in the crash.

"This was unavoidable," Durkin said. "There was no fault on his part."

Just after 7 p.m. Monday, Dean was driving south on S Dale Mabry Highway near Wyoming Avenue. Campbell was riding in the same direction, but in the center median of S Dale Mabry, Durkin said.

Campbell swerved into the path of Dean's car, and Dean slowed to avoid him. Campbell went back into the median, but swerved into Dean's path again and hit the Mitsubishi before Dean could avoid him, Durkin said.

Rescue workers took Campbell to Tampa General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
