Holiday service will be rewarded

Many consumers consider responsive customer service a dying art. Some blame the sales people. Others blame the retailers who equip them.
Rather than join the finger-pointing, the Florida Retail Federation has decided to honor a retail worker for performing above and beyond the call of duty during the frantic holiday season.
The statewide trade group is seeking nominees for its first Spirit of Santa Award.
The winner gets $500 in cash, a $250 gift certificate at Macy's and a two-night weekend at the Renaissance Vinoy Resort in St. Petersburg.
"We're looking for someone who epitomizes the holiday spirit by helping stressed-out shoppers," said Rick McAllister, chief executive officer of the federation, which has 10,000 member retail companies. "We're trying to get some recognition to the people who work their tails off solving shoppers' problems."
Nomination forms are available online at www.santacontest.com or will be mailed to those who call the company staging the contest at 850 681-3200 in Tallahassee.
Anyone can make nominations. Nominees can work in any Florida retail establishment, but must work in a job that serves shoppers. Deadline for submissions: 5 p.m. Friday.
