Notebook: Henry B. Plant Museum hosts Gasparilla exhibit

DOWNTOWN - To celebrate the Gasparilla season, the Henry B. Plant Museum is hosting a special exhibition, Gasparilla: Come One, Come All, starting today through Feb. 19.

The exhibit will show early photographs, rare artifacts and authentic costumes from the famous pirate-themed festival through the years.

New to the exhibit will be rare 1924 photographs of early floats. Current Gasparilla queen, Kelly Clewis Davis, will display her coronation and queen ball gowns.

Film footage from the 1920s Gasparilla festivals will be shown continuously.

The museum, 401 W Kennedy Blvd., is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Admission is a suggested donation of $5 for adults and $2 for children younger than 12. For more information, call 258-7302.

Downtown Partnership launches concert series

DOWNTOWN - The Tampa Downtown Partnership launches its fourth Gasparilla NoonTime Concert series Tuesday at Poe Plaza.

A different theme will be featured each Tuesday during the four-week series. The first will be Gasparilla Kickoff Day. Health and Fitness Day will be Jan. 31, followed by Culture and Entertainment Day on Feb. 7. The series will wrap up with Celebrate Downtown Day on Feb. 14.

All concerts are from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Poe Plaza, between the Hyatt Regency Tampa and Tampa City Center. For information, visit www.tampasdowntown.com

Psychologist offers relationship workshop

DOWNTOWN - Tampa psychologist Steve Shealy is offering a free workshop for people interested in strengthening their intimate relationships.

Mindfulness and Intimate Relationships: Moving Through Difficult Spaces is a workshop for couples and singles seeking intimate partnership. Shealy offers a practical model for applying greater awareness to the challenges of a relationship through mindful meditation.

The class will be offered from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lotus Room Yoga studio, 1101 W Kennedy Blvd. To register, call 989-9910.

Church to offer forum on Medicare drug benefits

BELMONT/JACKSON HEIGHTS - St. John's Missionary Baptist Church, 2504 E Chipco St., is hosting a community forum on the new Medicare prescription drug benefits from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Participants are encouraged to bring a list of their prescriptions, including brand names and dosages, and calculate how much of their own money they are spending for them.

Church membership is not required to attend. Anyone eligible for Medicare is eligible for Medicare prescription drug coverage. For information, go to www.medicare.gov

O'Keeffe exhibit brings in record attendance

DOWNTOWN - A recent exhibition, "Georgia O'Keeffe and Her Time," brought in a record attendance of 24,865 for the Tampa Museum of Art, museum officials said.

The exhibit, on loan from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, was on display from Oct. 2 to Jan. 8. It showcased masterpieces from the American Modernist Movement and included lectures, gallery talks, performances and events.

"I am extremely pleased with the success of the O'Keeffe exhibition and look forward to engaging all of the Tampa Bay community in our future endeavors," said Ken Rollins, the museum's interim executive director.

Foundation donates $25,000 for education

SEFFNER - Lazydays Partners Foundation gave $25,000 to the Hillsborough Education Fund on Jan. 18. The Patel Foundation for Global Understanding and the state of Florida matched the award with $25,000 and $50,000, respectively, bringing the total gift to $100,000.

The Lazydays foundation's donation is part of a $500,000 commitment over the next five years to benefit 50 local teens who need financial assistance to attend college.

The foundation is funded by contributions from Lazydays RV SuperCenter employees and customers. The Hillsborough Education Fund will select scholarship recipients annually.

Antique appraisals set for Saturday at college

DOWNTOWN - Bring your old favorite treasures to the Henry B. Plant Museum's "Antiques Road Show" this Saturday at the University of Tampa.

In conjunction with the museum, one Saturday a month skilled appraisers evaluate personal possessions such as paintings, furniture and jewelry.

An evaluation costs $5 per item, which goes to the restoration and renovation of the museum. Tickets will be sold from 10 a.m. to noon. If furniture is too large, bring a photograph.

The event will take place in the music room of University of Tampa's Plant Hall, 401 W Kennedy Blvd. For information, call 258-7302.

Tampa Orchid Club will meet on Tuesday

OLD SEMINOLE HEIGHTS - The Tampa Orchid Club's monthly meeting begins at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Seminole Garden Center, 5800 N Central Ave.

Jack Majewski will speak on "Hybridizing Orchids and the Surprises You Find." The free meeting is open to nonmembers. For more information, call 643-7258.
